About Us
About Wicked Hostels
We are Calgary’s newest and ONLY backpacker hostel owned and operated entirely by backpackers, for backpackers. Nestled in the heart of the Calgary Beltline, Wicked Hostel is the closest possible accommodation to the Calgary Stampede Grounds and Saddledome, in fact, it’s just across the street. We are also the closest hostel to the Calgary City Train/Transit system. The Calgary City Stampede Train Station is also literally right across the street so you don’t have to worry about hiking 2 km with your backpacks wandering around searching for your hostel. We are located on 17th Ave only three blocks from the Red Mile; Calgary’s famous party avenue. We are 4 blocks away from the trendy 4th St. and Mission entertainment and shopping areas (dining, drinking and shopping) For a bit of mall shopping its only a few minutes by train to Calgary’s Chinook Shopping Center. We are a 5 minute walk to the Calgary Tower and heart of Calgary’s downtown, 2 minutes to the Talisman Center (Olympic training facilities/pools/track), 2 minutes to the nearest local deli/grocer and 15 minutes to the nearest national-brand supermarket (less if you take the bus).
Why stay at Wicked Hostels? Well, we are a backpacker-owned hostel run entirely by backpackers so we’ve been in your shoes and we’ve tried to make our hostel match and exceed the best amenities we’ve seen. When you arrive, you are not going to find some random local that knows nothing about backpacking who opened a hostel because he thought it would make a lot of money, we opened this because we really love backpackers and hostelling. We can help you find what you are looking for in Calgary, make suggestions on great places to visit here and even help you with your forward travel plans to other regions. You are not going to find a curfew either, we’re not here to tell you when you can have a good time. We do ask that people are courteously quiet after 11:00pm so that anyone wanting to can get a good night’s rest but if you decide you want to hang-out in the common room at night or cook a midnight snack you can go right ahead. Personally, it really annoyed me getting to a hostel just to find out that “free” internet actually meant being charged $5 for each half-hour. So, of course, we will have a free internet computer and free WIFI throughout the building. One thing you will not find here is a TV, instead you will find a fully decked out common room with new leather couches, tables and a lot of very interesting backpackers. But if you are really dying to get a bit of TV watching in, we are planning on having “I’ve-Hit-The-Wall” movie nights every Monday (projected on the wall) when you just want to relax after a long hectic weekend.
We offer all of the standards you should be used to like free continental breakfast every morning, free tea and coffee all the time, free linens (we even make your bed up for you before you arrive), we will even do your laundry for you for free if you are staying for a week or longer. An guess what, we have free parking too, something not often found in Calgary. We also provide planned activities like group skating or tobogganing in the winter or *floats* down the Elbow River and free BBQ’s in the summer. Sometimes, we just decide today’s a good day to do a communal free supper for everyone.
We also thought after hiking down the Bow River trail, sight-seeing around downtown Calgary or just spending the day in Banff skiing, you might want to get a good night’s rest, so we fit all of our beds with top-of-the line Serta spring mattresses.
For security we have CCTV cameras throughout the common areas and corridors as well as keypad-locked front door (locked after 9pm). For the security of our guests, we only accept genuine backpackers carrying government-issued out of province/country ID and luggage/backpacks. We require a security deposit for group bookings of 5 or more and will not accept student groups, stag/stagette parties and guests under the age of 18.
